Auto Gallery - The Home Of Parts, Spares and Accessories!
When I was young(er), I, like most people my age with their first car, was forced to have to conduct my own auto repairs, principally because I couldn't afford to pay anyone else to do it. To be honest, it was an essential experience. I knew nothing about mechanics before I started (and many would argue that I knew less when I had finished!) However, I would seek out friends who knew more about it than I did, and learned how to go about it myself.
Of course the next stage was to find suitable vendors for auto accessories and auto parts. It is one thing diagnosing a problem, or even carrying out a basic service, but it is another thing to ensure that one gets the correct parts. To be honest, most private stores are owned by enthusiasts, and my experience is that they are always willing to help and to offer advice, especially if one is willing to listen.
But it does get more complicated than this of course (as life is prone to do) and there is often a choice to be had about the spares that are required. If you can afford it, then branded manufacturer spares are always going to be the best bet. However, the young and poorly paid cannot always make that choice with impunity, and will resort to buying copy (and often inferior) parts.
Getting one hands dirty on a car can be fun of course. Just knowing that you have achieved something with your bare hands is worth doing. For my part, I knew that my mechanic's days were numbered when I took the best part of a day to do an oil change! But I did it, and I did it by myself.
